Writing a letter to a

Donor Recipient

Guidelines for Writing to a Recipient

With your selfless donation, we were able to restore sight to at least two individuals. As the Legal Next of Kin of an eye donor, you may wish to write a heartfelt letter for the recipient(s) who received your loved one’s corneas. Families that wish to write to the recipient may find comfort in talking about their loved ones and the significance they made in their lives. Please note that this is a private and personal decision; the recipients may or may not respond with another letter. The San Diego Eye Bank forwards these letters without identifying information to protect the privacy of donor families and recipients. This guide might help you through the process if you choose to write a heartfelt letter to the recipient.

Suggestions of what you may want to include:

  • Your relationship to the donor
  • The donor’s occupation
  • The donor’s hobbies, interests, characteristics, personality
  • The donor’s City/State of residence
  • About the donor’s survivors: i.e., Children, grandchildren, siblings
  • What you loved about your loved one
  • Any other details you may want to share about your loved one

Please do not include any identifying information such as:

  • Your last name, date of birth, or address
  • Your phone number or email address
  • Your loved one’s last name, date of birth, or address
  • Facility or location of where your loved one passed away
  • The exact date of your loved one’s death (you may add the month and year)
  • Facility or location of where you’re loved one worked

Closing the Letter: Sign your first name only. Place the letter in an unsealed envelope and do not address it

On a separate sheet of paper, please include:

  • Your full name, mailing address, and telephone number
  • Your loved one’s full name and date of birth
  • Your loved one’s date of death

Please include the enclosed Release Form for Authorization if you would like to share your story with others and exemplify the selfless act kindness of donors and their families in future SDEB electronic and printed materials.
